It’s November; which means everyone in the country is gearing up for good food and good times with family. In Cashiers, NC, people are gearing up for another year of Gobble on the Green, and a fun Turkey Trot 5k that gets participants up and active on a day that most people commit to eating and napping. This year, the event will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, and will begin at 10 a.m.

History of The Event

This was the first year in many years that there was a Thanksgiving Day 5k in Cashiers, NC. In 2018, The Village Green of Cashiers decided to start up the 5k again. Last Thanksgiving, around 450 people in the community came out to celebrate Thanksgiving and run in the 5k. This was a bigger turnout than expected, but brought excitement that this was an event that would be embraced by the community for years to come.

“We don’t have an idea yet on how many people will participate this year, but we are prepared for whoever wants to come out and participate and have a really great time,” said Ann Self, who has served as Executive Director of The Village Green since 2012.

Things to Know About the Gobble on the Green 5k

The race will begin at the Village Green and will wind down Frank Allen Road, behind businesses on Highway 107, and then around Cashiers Lake. The main race for Gobble on the Green is only $25 dollars for adults to enter, which includes their specially designed t-shirt to commemorate the race. The Village Green is also holding a race for children between the ages of 5five-10, and a one-mile fun run, which is completely free to enter. However, parents are still required to register children ahead of time on the website.

One thing that is different this year is that participants of the race are encouraged to pick up their race packet with all the information they need the day before, on November 27, from 3-6 p.m., to save time and avoid longer lines on race day. Those who can’t be there the day before can still pick up packets the morning of the race, just as it was last year.

Ann Self believes the event is unique to other community events, yet fosters the same kind of connections. “Gobble on the Green appeals to all ages and fitness levels, and serves as a great way to get some fresh air and exercise before the feast,” said Self. “The competitiveness of the race remains good-natured throughout.”

Some people enter the race just to get outside, walk the route, and be a part of the excitement that the event brings. Some people like the outlet for exercise, before they go and enjoy a huge meal with their families. Despite the laid-back feel of the event, overall winners are recognized at the end, and their prize will be pies from local bakery, Cream and Flutter, to take home to their families as a Thanksgiving dessert. Other winners are recognized by age group, and as people are finishing the race, door prize winners will be announced as well. Whether you walk away from the race with a pie, a door prize or simply good memories, you’ll have a great time at the Gobble on the Green 5k.

What is The Village Green?

The Village Green is a nonprofit organization that runs the 12+ acre park in the heart of Cashiers, NC, and hosts many events for the community throughout the year, such as the Groovin’ on the Green summer concert series, Goblins on the Green for Halloween, and of course, this popular Thanksgiving day event. The park consists of an event space, pavilion, gardens, sculptures and even a playground. The idea of The Village Green was born in 1992, when community members came together with the shared desired to keep the “village” feel to Cashiers, while also giving people a shared space to relax and play. Being a non-profit, The Village Green relies on donations to be maintained, and over 2,000 community members have donated, or continue to donate to keep the space up for locals and visitors alike.

Over the years, The Board of Directors has recognized that one major thing that The Village Green lacks is an indoor event space for community use. This event space is currently under construction, and so far, $2.6 million has been raised for its completion. Given that approximately 100 events are held each year at The Village Green, this space is a necessary addition for a park growing in popularity.

“We are grateful to our event sponsors who support the Cashiers Valley Leaf Festival, and of course Gobble on the Green,” said Self. “We especially appreciate Platinum Sponsor Landmark Realty Group for contributing at the highest level to make these community events possible.” If you are interested in running in the Gobble on the Green 5k, you can find more information and even sign up for yourself or your child at https://runsignup.com/GobbleontheGreen5K.
