Learn About Highlands, NC History

Highlands has an interesting backstory. It was founded in 1875 by two Kansas developers. Legend says they drew a line on a map from New York to New Orleans;, and another from Savannah to Chicago.

The two developers predicted that those lines would one day become a major trade route. They also anticipated that someday the place where those lines intersected would become a booming metropolis.

By 1883, Highlands was home to nearly 300 immigrants. By the early 1880s, it had everything residents needed: a hardware and general merchandise store, hotel and boarding house, a grocery store, post office, public library, a first-class school and four churches.

The Cullasaja River was dammed in the late 1920s, forming Lake Sequoyah, which helped provide hydroelectric power. The muddy roads in and out of Highlands were secured with crushed stone, which made them easier for residents and new visitors to navigate. By the time the Chamber of Commerce was established in 1931, there were already 25 businesses, and the town's population had blossomed to 500 people with 2,500 to 3,000 summer visitors.
