Sapphire Valley History:
The gem mining trade put Sapphire Valley, NC on the map when gold, sapphires, and other gemstones were found in the area in the mid- to late-1800’s. The largest gold mine was located at the base of Bald Rock Mountain and is now covered by the waters of Fairfield Lake. Miners were paid in cash for the gold and gems they found and became known as “cashiers,” (pronounced “CASH-erz”) which also became the name of the nearby town, Cashiers NC.
Like other communities in the western North Carolina mountains, once gem mining was no longer profitable land owners began to build inns to attract visitors to the mountains. Sapphire Valley, NC and Lake Toxaway, NC became a destination for well-to-do people who wanted to escape the city heat in the summer. Fairfield Lake was created and became the beautiful centerpiece of Sapphire Valley, NC.
