Known as the “Switzerland of America”, this man-made lake was the first to be created in the Appalachian Mountains.  The Toxaway Company completed the excavation of Lake Toxaway in 1903.  Today, with fourteen miles of shoreline, Lake Toxaway remains the largest private lake in North Carolina.  In an effort to preserve the pristine solitude of the lake, only residents are allowed its use.
